'This Island' by Sharon Millar

1st - 23rd December 2019

‘This Island’ is a spellbinding collection of Sharon’s paintings that beautifully showcases her distinctive painting style. Through colour, texture, swirling strokes, darkness and light you will be transported to the drama and moodiness of Ireland’s coastline, including the occasional mermaid sighting.

Sharon Millar - 'This Island'

Sharon’s Fine Art painting practice taps in to that excitement she felt as a little girl watching a photographic image develop… a slower process of layering acrylic paint, enamels and metallic inks on canvas and allowing the colours to mix and mingle together, both through painstaking brush application, and with layering and laying the paint on as puddles – moving the canvas to create movement and texture, in it’s own way, that truly evokes a feeling of water, sky and land. Sharon’s subject varies, and includes figures (both real, and mystical), flower forms and landscapes but the unique painterly movement, moody colour palettes, contrasted with cheerful bold colour remains constant in all her works.

‘This Island’ is spellbinding. It beautifully showcases Sharon’s distinctive painting style, while at the same time capturing the drama and moodiness of Ireland’s coastlines. The energy tangible, you can almost hear the ocean and taste the saltiness of the spray on your face.

As part of the exhibition Sharon has generously donated the full sale price of ‘Strand Beach’ to Marie Curie and The Chest Heart and Stroke Foundation, in memory of a close friend. The painting sold very quickly but guests still have the chance to donate to the charities by using the gallery Christmas Wishing Tree to leave a wish or a memory in the form of a ribbon or bauble tied to a branch. Wishing trees have long been a part of Irish folklore, and it is a work of art in itself watching this little tree filling up. The tree is strong, it can take all of our wishes, thoughts and memories.
